When the story of the Seid practitioner was brought to my attention by Mistress Wilja, 3 years ago, I absolutely fell in love. Chapter 4 of the Eirik the Red Saga describes the spaekona and what she was wearing and what she was doing in the home of the chief. I love learning and while technically a Christian, I am open to all religions and religious practices. This allowed me to delve into the religion of my ancestry but also let me continue my love of learning and spiritualism. A spaekona was important to the community because before the advent of the Christian religions and the use of male priests/ministers and the even doctors, the spaekona was there as a healer, minister, theologian. The majority of spaekona's were women as it was seen as unmanly for males to participate in seid. The term ergi, means submissive and unmanly. Any male that practices sied, would be labeled.
I had the best time completing these items. Almost everything I did was the first time. I made glass bead, a dress by hand with period techniques, fur gloves, and persona presentation. As a teacher, I have written many research papers and this was probably the easier item for me. Paper writing while difficult for many, I absolutely love it.
If you would like to geek out with me about seid and the practice or seid, please let me know.
