This is one of several sagas that mention Seid and the woman that are responsible for practicing seid. The story is mainly about the life of Eirik the red but this single section provides a glimpse into the life of the Seid practitioner. The following is a brief summary of the events. However, the section also tells us a detailed description of the clothes that she would have worn.
In chapter 4 of the Eirik the Ruada Saga, Thorbjorg is introduced. She is the Seid practitioner that made the journey to Greenland. Eirik was a devout pagan and Seid was important to him even when his son Lief and his wife converted to Christianity.
The story explains how during a drought, Thorbjorg was brought to the home of the chieftain of the area, Thorkell. Thorkell made sure to provide her with a high seat as well as a prepared meal. The meal consisted of "porridge of kid's milk and the hearts of the living creatures from the area. (I will discuss this in another post).
After the meal, she rested. The next day she asked for the women of the area, especially those that know the Wyrd songs (I will discuss this in another post). By this time, not many of the women were knowledgeable however there was one that was able to help. The spirits were happy and Thorbjorg was able to give predictions.
This brief introduction helped guide my research into this world. There are many aspects of this world that I will discuss in future posts. The posts will include The Voluspa poem, Wyrd, foods, the types of Seid, Spinning, and the Pagan lady of Peel.
